Testimonials
"Many of our college students in the public universities, though literate, are not proficient critical or enthusiastic readers. I want to use the SIBL CD to help change that, for, although reading is low on the list of favorite things to do for so many students, listening to music ranks pretty high.."
- Leslie Bennett, University of Tennessee
"As a high school English teacher of eight years, I am constantly on the lookout for ideas to connect the world with literature for my 21st century students... With your project, I am inspired to take another step in the direction of school-age literacy. Thank you, thank you!"
- Dazon Freeman, Half Moon Bay, California
"Your CD was extremely helpful to me when I taught The Odyssey to my freshmen. Even my most struggling students responded to Suzanne Vega's "Calypso" when asked to analyze the song, and help engage them through reading the difficult text. What an excellent program you have created!"
- A High School Teacher from Los Angeles

Ekphrasis ProjectInspired by the greek word, ekphrasis - 'an artistic description of art', Artists for Literacy now offers a methodology on how to create art about books in order to deepen students' connection to those books. Deep artistic engagement with a book can lead to better comprehension, increased critical thinking around the themes of the book, and an overall increase in the desire to finish the book and continue reading other books. schedule / curriculum for the program |
